September 2019

NEVER A TIME

-Grace E. Easley

There’s never a thought God doesn’t know,

And never an act He doesn’t see.

Every moment of our lives,

He’s looking after you and me.

There’s never a pain He doesn’t share,

And never a joy He doesn’t send,

Never a cry He doesn’t hear,

And never a heart He cannot mend.

There’s never a wrong God doesn’t right,

Or noble deed He doesn’t bless,

Never a worthless soul to Him,

Though it be clothed in shabbiness.

Never a dream He doesn’t know,

Never a hope He doesn’t share,

There’s never a day when God forgets,

And never a time He doesn’t care.

“For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”

Philippians 2:13

I stumbled upon this clever but challenging story called, “The Carpenter’s Tools” (author unknown).  Enjoy and be inspired!

Brother Hammer served as the chairman.  The other members of the tool belt informed him that he must leave, because he was too noisy.  But brother Hammer said, “If I have to leave this carpenter’s shop, then brother Gimlet must go too.  He’s insignificant and makes a very small impression.”  (A gimlet is a small tool with a screw point, grooved shank, and a cross handle for boring holes.)  Little brother Gimlet  arose and said, “All right, but brother Screwdriver must go also.  You have to turn him around and around to get anywhere with him.”  Brother Screwdriver turned to the other tools in the belt and said, “If you wish, I will go, but brother Plane must leave too.  All of his work is on the surface; there’s no depth to what he does.”  To this, brother Plane leveled his terse replay, “Well, then, brother Saw will have to depart too.  The changes he proposes always cut too deep.”  Brother Saw complained saying, “Brother Ruler will have to withdraw if I leave, for he’s always measuring other folks as though he were the only one who is right.”  Brother Ruler then surveyed the group and said, “Brother Sandpaper doesn’t belong here either.  He’s rougher than he ought to be, and is always rubbing people the wrong way.”

In the midst of the discussion, the Carpenter of Nazareth walked in.  He had come to perform his day’s work.  He put on His tool belt and went to the workbench to make a pulpit.  He employed the Ruler, the Saw, the Plane, the Hammer, the Gimlet, the Screwdriver, the Sandpaper, and all the other tools.  When the day’s work was over, the pulpit was finished, and the carpenter went home.

All the accusations against each of these tools were absolutely true, yet the carpenter used every one of them.  No matter which tool He used, no other tool could have done the work better.

You and I are God’s “tools”.  While we have our flaws, each of us has a purpose, ability, and a task to perform.  Won’t you let God use you today?

Working Together in Christ,

Pastor Richard A. Nelson

Pastor Nelson will be on vacation from September 12 through September 18.  Pastor Paul Clark will be providing pastoral care.  Call the church office with any pastoral needs.

SHARING THE MINISTRY OF ALSACE

Be sure to tell others about the ministry of Alsace:

It is a welcoming and friendly congregation.  There is always inspiration and hope, not to mention good food!  The people of Alsace have a sense of purpose and mission of serving others.  Alsace centers its congregational life on the grace of God, which is for all people.  Start spreading the news; that is, the “Good News” of God’s love and the ministry and mission of Alsace.

CHURCH CAMP REFLECTIONS

Church Camp 2019 was a great week of Christian fellowship, learning and fun.  There were 24 energetic, cooperative, polite and enthusiastic campers, and 22 dedicated, charismatic staff.  The weather was almost perfect, with warm days, cool nights (for sleeping), and just one afternoon of rain.  The theme, “Soar-Navigating God’s Grace,” helped us understand how God loves, forgives, provides, equips and guides us so that we can soar.

Highlights of this year:

  • Morning Praise & Worship and Evening Vespers with lots of singing, clapping and dancing in praise of our awesome God;
  • Great meals and snacks prepared and served by our own Kitchen staff
  • Amazing Crafts
  • Team games – relays, water balloon fight, scavenger hunt
  • Swimming and free time
  • Boating and Mini-Golf
  • Wednesday night beach party

CHURCH CAMP, cont.

  • The emotional closing Love Feast
  • The musical program, “The Amazing Grace Race,” presented by all the church campers
  • Tuesday camp fire and cook out
  • Creative meal prayers to Disney tunes, accompanied on the ukulele
  • Fire alarm going off, twice, because of a faulty exhaust fan
  • “Mind” games (“There’s a storm coming!”)
  • Making memories

Thanks again to our fantastic Camp Staff, who keep on giving and giving even when the days seem to get longer and tiring, and the sleeping gets shorter.

Church Camp 2019 is now history, but biblical truths were learned and experienced, memories were made and cherished, and now we look forward to next year’s camp.  Stay tuned for the announcement of next year’s dates and theme, the 46th year of Church Camp!

COMMUNITY

Tower Health at Home is currently recruiting new volunteers for their Hospice Program.  Volunteering for hospice is a beautiful ministry that is appreciated by our patients and families.  Our volunteers are wonderful individuals who dedicate their time and talents to improve the quality of life of our patients during this time of need.  They are looking for compassionate volunteers who may be a good listener, enjoy playing an instrument, willing to help family members run errands or assist with administrative tasks at our office.  These simple gestures make a huge difference.

If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, please contact Cassondra Kissinger, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, at 610-378-0481, ext. 3115 or email her at:
