“Church on the Hill, Standing on the Word”
February 2020
Love
-Nick Kenny
Just saying that “I love you”
doesn’t mean a thing at all,
for loving words fly like the birds,
when they hear winter’s call.
Love is a thing that proves itself
a thousand times a day,
in the simple little things you do,
and the little things you say.
Love is a thing called sacrifice,
a tonic, when you’re blue
love the joy of doing things
for someone dear to you.

“For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works,
which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.”
(Ephesians 2:10)
I came across this thought-provoking little story called, “The Carpenter’s Tools.” The author is unknown. I hope this story convicts you as it did me.
THE CARPENTER’S TOOLS
(Author Unknown)
Brother Hammer served as the chairman. The other members of the tool belt informed him that he must leave, because he was too noisy. But brother Hammer said, “If I have to leave this carpenter’s shop, then brother Gimlet must go too. He’s insignificant and makes a very small impression. Little brother Gimlet arose and said, “All right, but brother Screwdriver must go also. You have to turn him around and around to get anywhere with him.” Brother Screwdriver turned to the other tools in the belt and said, “If you wish, I will go, but brother Plane must leave too. All his work is on the surface; there’s no depth to what he does.” To this, brother Plane leveled his terse reply, “Well, then, brother Saw will have to depart t00. The changes he proposes always cut too deep.” Brother Saw complained, saying, “Brother Ruler will have to withdraw if I leave, for he’s always measuring other folks as though he were the only one who is right.” Brother Ruler surveyed the group and said, “Brother Sandpaper doesn’t belong here either. He’s rougher than he ought to be, and is always rubbing people the wrong way.”
In the midst of the discussion, the Carpenter of Nazareth walked in. He had come to perform his day’s work. He put on His tool belt and went to the workbench to make a pulpit. He employed the Ruler, the Saw, the Plane, the Hammer, the Gimlet, the Screwdriver, the Sandpaper, and all the other tools. When the day’s work was over, the pulpit was finished, and the carpenter went home. All the accusations against each of these tools were absolutely true, yet the carpenter used every one of them. No matter which tool He used, no other tool could have done the work better.
You and I are God’s “tools”. While we have our flaws, each of us has a purpose, ability, and a task to perform. Won’t you let God use you today?
Your Servant in Christ,
Pastor Richard Nelson

February
-Lois Anne Williams
February is the bridge February is promise
That crossed into spring; To those who patient be
A hint of springtime magic That flowers soon will appear
Is the gift that he would bring, And leaves will clothe each tree.
And smiling through each snowstorm The white will be transformed
That winter sends our way To fresh green everywhere
He knows the snow will vanish As February ushers in
In a not too distant day. A warmer bit of air.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son,
who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14
I once heard a touching story (author unknown) that describes what Christmas is all about. I hope you enjoy it.
Jeffie was in his playpen and he was crying. Tears were rolling down his little cheeks, his face was red as it could be. He was crying, and he looked pitiful in his little baseball T-shirt and diaper. Then Jeffie’s Grandpa entered the room; Jeffie’s little face lit up when he saw his Grandpa! He immediately reached out his little arms and said, “Out PawPaw out.”
What is a Grandpa to do? How can someone resist that? So Grandpa went over to the playpen and bent over. He reached down to lift his little grandchild from captivity and distress. Just then “Law and Order” walked into the room. Mommy said, “Jeffie, you stay right there! I’m punishing you because you have been naughty! Dad, leave Jeffie alone!”
What is a Grandpa to do? Grandpa backs off and things, “I can’t just pick up a book and read it with Jeffie here. He would think I was uncaring and distant. I can’t leave the room because he would feel like I abandoned him.” What is a Grandpa to do? But love always finds a way.
Since Grandpa couldn’t take Jeffie out of the playpen, Grandpa climbed in with Jeffie! Grandpa said, “If you are in the playpen buddy, I’m in the playpen too.” Having Grandpa join him in his “prison cell” brought Jeffie great comfort and joy. In the midst of his captivity, Jeffie no longer felt so alone.
What Jeffie’s Grandpa did is a picture of what Jesus Christ did for us when He came to earth as a baby. God the Father yearned to reach down into our “playpen of captivity” and pull us out. He could not because of our disobedience, because of our sin. What did God do? God climbed into our “playpen” with us! When Jesus Christ entered into our “playpen of captivity” and died for us, He took the consequences of sin and disobedience that should have been ours alone, releasing us from our captivity, allowing us the opportunity to experience the fullness of life God has for us, both here and forever!
This story is an illustration of the Incarnation, which is the theological term used to indicate how God took on human flesh in the person of Jesus and came to earth to live with us. That is what we celebrate during Advent and Christmas seasons. And that is what Christmas is all about!
Wishing you all a –
Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!

NEVER A TIME
-Grace E. Easley
There’s never a thought God doesn’t know,
And never an act He doesn’t see.
Every moment of our lives,
He’s looking after you and me.
There’s never a pain He doesn’t share,
And never a joy He doesn’t send,
Never a cry He doesn’t hear,
And never a heart He cannot mend.
There’s never a wrong God doesn’t right,
Or noble deed He doesn’t bless,
Never a worthless soul to Him,
Though it be clothed in shabbiness.
Never a dream He doesn’t know,
Never a hope He doesn’t share,
There’s never a day when God forgets,
And never a time He doesn’t care.

“For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”
Philippians 2:13
I stumbled upon this clever but challenging story called, “The Carpenter’s Tools” (author unknown). Enjoy and be inspired!
Brother Hammer served as the chairman. The other members of the tool belt informed him that he must leave, because he was too noisy. But brother Hammer said, “If I have to leave this carpenter’s shop, then brother Gimlet must go too. He’s insignificant and makes a very small impression.” (A gimlet is a small tool with a screw point, grooved shank, and a cross handle for boring holes.) Little brother Gimlet arose and said, “All right, but brother Screwdriver must go also. You have to turn him around and around to get anywhere with him.” Brother Screwdriver turned to the other tools in the belt and said, “If you wish, I will go, but brother Plane must leave too. All of his work is on the surface; there’s no depth to what he does.” To this, brother Plane leveled his terse replay, “Well, then, brother Saw will have to depart too. The changes he proposes always cut too deep.” Brother Saw complained saying, “Brother Ruler will have to withdraw if I leave, for he’s always measuring other folks as though he were the only one who is right.” Brother Ruler then surveyed the group and said, “Brother Sandpaper doesn’t belong here either.

SHARING THE MINISTRY OF ALSACE
Be sure to tell others about the ministry of Alsace:
It is a welcoming and friendly congregation. There is always inspiration and hope, not to mention good food! The people of Alsace have a sense of purpose and mission of serving others. Alsace centers its congregational life on the grace of God, which is for all people. Start spreading the news; that is, the “Good News” of God’s love and the ministry and mission of Alsace.
CHURCH CAMP REFLECTIONS
Church Camp 2019 was a great week of Christian fellowship, learning and fun. There were 24 energetic, cooperative, polite and enthusiastic campers, and 22 dedicated, charismatic staff. The weather was almost perfect, with warm days, cool nights (for sleeping), and just one afternoon of rain. The theme, “Soar-Navigating God’s Grace,” helped us understand how God loves, forgives, provides, equips and guides us so that we can soar.
Highlights of this year:
CHURCH CAMP, cont.
Thanks again to our fantastic Camp Staff, who keep on giving and giving even when the days seem to get longer and tiring, and the sleeping gets shorter.
Church Camp 2019 is now history, but biblical truths were learned and experienced, memories were made and cherished, and now we look forward to next year’s camp. Stay tuned for the announcement of next year’s dates and theme, the 46th year of Church Camp!

A FATHER’S PRAYER
-Author Unknown
Give me, O God, the wisdom that I need
To mold the tender lives within my care:
Give me the power that I may subtly lead
Them to righteousness – true joy is there.
I ask for them no rainbowed path of ease;
I ask for them no store of wealth and fame;
I only ask that by their lives they please
Thee and the world with an untarnished name,
I know that man is weak, and life is strong,
And sometimes honest roads look very drear;
That winning laurels often takes too long
And luring vistas from all sides appear.
But while my young are still beneath my wing,
God, help me guide them right in everything.

June 21, 2019 is one of my favorite days of the year – it’s the first day of Summer. I love summer!
I can’t help but to think of that song by George Gershwin: “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy.” Although things remain busy here in the summer at Alsace Church with the Peach Festival, Vacation Bible School, and Church Camp, summertime just seems more relaxed.
Summertime is also the time for vacations, the time when we are supposed to “get away from it all” for a while. However, a recent study showed that 40 percent of Americans do not take all their paid time off, even though their employers encourage them to take their vacation time. Studies also show that Europeans, who work less hours and vacation more than twice the time Americans do, are more productive in the workplace overall. So, what’s wrong with us?
Did you know that the Bible encourages us to take vacations? Cindi McMenamin, a national speaker and best-selling author, says there are five reasons that taking a vacation is biblical. First, Jesus was all for a “getaway.” In Mark 6:31-32, we read: “Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest awhile.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves.” Jesus knew that His followers needed time to refocus and revitalize their souls, and also to rest. Jesus knows we need time to rest and recoup, and He goes with us to pour rest back into our soul.
Second, vacations make us better stewards. Studies have shown that workers are far more productive after returning from a vacation, because of the fact that increased hours of sleep and decreased levels of stress led to more productivity. The Bible commands us to be good stewards and by giving our best at what we do. In Colossians 3:23, we are told, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”
Third, vacations reduce stress. Stress kills the body, and the Bible tells us to care for our bodies as the dwelling place of God: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God?” (1 Corinthians 6:19). So, treat your temple carefully by giving it the rest and change of pace that it occasionally needs.
Fourth, vacations spur our creativity and worship. Vacations give us the opportunity to be outdoors and experience the wonder of what God has made by enjoying His blessings. We all need these times to rejuvenate our creativity for our work. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” We can enjoy our time off, and enjoy this time with God.
Fifth, vacations prevent burnout. Symptoms of burnout include: irritability; outbursts of anger and cynicism; badly treating your friends, family members, co-workers, and even strangers. Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-39). You can better love your neighbors by doing what it takes to re-energize your soul and avoid burnout.
So, go ahead and take that vacation. Those you love will thank you for it. And, you may find yourself experiencing more of God as well!
Wishing You Peace and Rest for Your Soul,
Pastor Richard A. Nelson
Pastor Nelson will be on vacation from June 24 through July 8. Pastor Dave Reinwald will be providing pastoral care. Call the church office with any pastoral needs.

ONE NATION WITHOUT GOD
-Unknown
America, the beautiful.
Home of the brave and free,
is threatened by evil
that we don’t see.
We are “One nation, under God.”
Guided by His loving light,
but we’ll be a nation “without” God
if we don’t stand and fight.
We, the vast majority,
must join hand in hand
before the small minority
takes God’s name from our land.
No matter our religion,
we have a job to do;
We must band together
to defeat the ungodly few.
God gave us freedom in this land
to worship and to pray.
How can we idly just sit by
watching it be taken away?
There is a God in Heaven.
Let’s not let His light go dim.
How can He bless us from above
if we won’t acknowledge Him?
